The Objectives
To compile updated historical, social, human and natural information about the Mediterranean to ensure the very existence of a Mediterranean eco-system and of tracing a map of research and teaching in the Mediterranean.
To assure the diffusion of these books in the entire basin of the Mediterranean; their simultaneous translation in the various languages; and their distribution in the various countries.
To verify if the Mediterranean - given the complexities, the varieties, and the tensions that characterize it - constitutes an entity which could be an object of an analysis and of a global research. The present structure of knowledge seems rather inefficient for this plan since there are few disciplines that refer either directly or indirectly to the Mediterranean. A dispassionate examination of this potentiality could reasonably lead to the undertaking of this project. This project can be tackled in two ways: on one hand, by offering a wide historical prospective to show that all past antagonism have left scars which are less important than exchanges and positive contributions; on the other hand, while it is not possible to limit itself to any particular historical identity, the Encyclopedia explains the present in order to understand those fears and difficulties which today impose themselves upon all those who endeavour to change and mix the cultures typical of the Mediterranean. The undertaking of such cultural work intends to include the Mediterranean within spheres of modern debate, of reflection and research of prospectives proper to the aspirations of people in the Mediterranean. The return to the world of knowledge and to the conceptions of the various disciplines should prove of great interest.
